Make your MARK with Willow Charcoal

Did you know? There is actually a difference between Willow and compressed charcoal. Compressed charcoal is a powdered charcoal that is bound together with gums and waxes and this is why it is generally hard. Willow charcoal on the other hand is soft and powdery because no binding agent has been used in its manufacturing.

Charcoal is a very versatile art supplies. It can be used to make quick sketches to portray compositions, in still life and life drawing and then it can be utilized as a sole medium in professional artwork. A lot can be achieved with this very simple medium, produce fine lines with charcoal pencils, thick strokes with compressed charcoal sticks and smudges with charcoal powder. Draw on anything from canvas to paper; charcoal will grip to anything that has a tooth (texture). Popular charcoal papers include the very inexpensive butchers paper, which is great for throwaway sketches, as it will yellow overtime. Cartridge paper is also great for charcoal drawing especially if you are after a bright white surface to draw on. There are a lot of different varieties of charcoal paper; Colourfix, Favini and Mi-Teintes are among the different brands. All of these papers are coloured and heavier in weight than general paper and are used by advanced students and professional artists. The Colourfix range also has a coloured gesso that is textured, this can be painted onto any surface from strawboard to timber and it will give you a surface to draw on. It is especially designed for charcoal and pastel artists. Other supplies you might need in the studio to compliment your charcoal drawing supplies are kneadable eraserspaper stumps and sponges these are great for blending and creating shadow in your artwork. You might also need a can of fixative; there are some great acid free and non-yellowing ones in the art supplies market.
