What is the Best Watercolour Paper in the Art Supplies World?
Choosing the best watercolour paper really depends on the type of paper you like to work with and the style of artwork you are wanting to achieve.
Watercolour paper is a staple item in all art supplies stores but each and every store will stock a range of brands and sizes. Watercolour paper is generally available in pads, rolls and sheets; pad sizes are usually fairly standard A4, A3, A2 and A1and large watercolor sheets are typically 500x700mm. Rolls are available in a range of heights and meterage sizes, these are made for large scale works or custom pieces. Yupo paper a unique Japanese water colour painting paper has an assorted range of larger sizes and pads.
In each pad, paper and roll size there are also variations in paper weights, lighter versions of watercolour paper are only really good for testing techniques on and drawing on or even doing some traditional printmaking or mixed media applications. Lighter weights of watercolour paper tend to buckle when water washes are applied even if they have been stretched properly on a board with gum paper tape.
300gsm paper is our go to, the most popular watercolour paper in the art supplies market. There isn’t a professional watercolour artist that we know of that uses anything under 300gsm and we have over a decade of experience to back this. If you are using Yupo watercolour paper there are exceptions because this isn’t a cotton rag paper it is synthetic.
Once you have decided on the size and weight of your paper the next big thing is the surface you like to work on. Do you like smooth watercolor paper known as hot press, textured (canvas type of feel and finish) which is referred to as cold press or extremely lumpy and bumpy which is rough? If you are drawing or illustrating the preferred watercolour paper by many is hot press. Botanical artists love 300gsm hot press paper as it gives their illustrations a smooth flawless look. Choosing the best watercolor paper for any other mediums is completely the artists choice and of course as creators we love to bend the rules.
