One of the easiest and most rewarding ways to engage in a creative process is with a pencil or two. Practically everyone has used a pencil at one point in his or her life, pencils offer an easily understandable medium in which children as well as trained professionals can equally benefit. Pencils can range tremendously depending on their purpose, how they are made, and how they are used.
Pencils are one of the most popular ways to sketch out ideas prior to committing to another more complex medium. They can be an art form in and of themselves. They can be a great way for children to engage in art for the first time while at the same time being ideal for adults and professionals.
Are you looking for a specific type of pencil to do a job or a particular brand? As a team of artists and creators we have used just about every type of pencil imaginable and here is a quick run down of what we have found.
COLOURED PENCILS; Coloured pencils provide a great, way for young and old to explore colour. You have basic coloured pencils like the Lyra Giants and Ferby which are the best coloured pencils for kids in price and quality and then you have their Polycolor range which is designed for architects, designers, professional artists and are great for intricate adult colouring books. Other pencil brands we stock are
Conte, Derwent, Faber-Castell, Staedtler and the much loved Prismacolors. If you want a pencil that is top of the line then Prismacolors are for you. Available as single pencils and in sets these coloured pencils blend beautifully together and the colours stay bright and true to themselves. Favoured among artists, crafters, designers, fashion designers, graphic designers, tattoo artists and the list truly goes on and on. A recognised brand around the world they beat Derwent hands down. Just give them a go.
LIQUID PENCIL; There are always new things happening in the art supplies market and liquid pencils are now on board. Packaged in a small pot, liquid pencil comes in a range of tones and basic colours, it is diluted with water and applied to your paper or canvas using a paintbrush. It is great for covering large areas and creating watercolour effects. You can easily sketch back into the washes with a charcoal, lead or graphite pencil. If you want to get really experimental coloured pencils, pastels and chalk will also work.
GRAPHITE PENCILS; Are best described as belonging to the lead pencil family, graphite pencils are extremely smooth. They are excellent for sketching out ideas and doing life drawing on bulky news or cartridge. Graphite pencils do not have a wooden case around the lead, the lead is generally contained within a thin paper or plastic wrapping that protects it. This makes them great for breaking so that you can use the sides of the pencil to block or shade large areas quickly.
LEAD PENCILS; Are the most commonly used pencils around the world, they are used at a very early age by many who are learning to draw and write and they are used by professionals for exactly the same thing. A pencil can embrace a wide variety of art forms from graphic design, sketching, illustrating; well the list is endless. But did you know? HB is the most common pencil, a H pencil lets us know it has a hard lead, a B pencil lets us know how black it is and an F pencil tells us how fine the lead is. There are many different brands of lead pencils in the art supplies market. The best lead pencil brands really is a personal preference Cretacolor, Derwent , Faber-Castell, Generals, Kimberly, Lyra and Staedtler are all well known brands in the art supplies industry. MECHANICAL PENCILS; Are a lead pencil that is in-cased in a plastic or metal cylinder. The leads are purchased separately to the pencil and can be super fine for architects, designers, drafters and illustrators; thick leads can also be purchased in varying grades which are more suited to drawing and sketching. CHAROAL PENCILS; are also a staple art supplies, they are great for drawing and sketching but have a different consistency about them when compared to lead pencils and graphite. Charcoal produces a deeper textural tone that can create a unique shaded effect that is hard to replicate with another medium.
PASTEL PENCILS; These pencils are great for blending, bringing in extra fine details to existing pastel work or mixed media pieces. Pastel pencils allow you to enjoy the art of pastels with little mess, their leads are just as soft and powdery as pastel sticks and Pan pastels and they blend just as easily with the same pastel tools. Pastel pencils can easily be sharpened with a pastel board.
CHINAGRAPH PENCILS; Are also referred to as a wax pencil or China marker, they are pretty unique as they are designed to draw on hard glossy surfaces like glass, ceramic, plastic, porcelain and rock. Artists and trades people love them.
