Different Kinds of Artist Brushes

Did you know? A size 2 or no.2 paint brush is a brush size in one brand and another size in a different brand even though they are marked the same size.

When you are learning to paint whether you are a complete beginner or not it is best to equip yourself with the right artist tools. I can't tell you how many times I have spoken to people who want to learn how to paint but have set themselves up for failure right from the very start. There is nothing worse when creative dreams are shattered all because they haven't bought the right art supplies.

Each brush is crafted to perform a specific function, below is a VERY brief description of some of the most common paint brushes and their purpose.

The ROUND tip brush can create thick and thin strokes, and is ideal for filling in small areas on your painting. The RIGGER or LINER brush has a round tip but the hairs are very long it is ideally used to create thin lines. The FLAT brush is shaped more like a rectangle or square and is designed to fill in wide spaces. The straight edge can be used to create fine lines, stripes, and straight edges. Wider and larger variants of the flat brush are ideal for varnishing and painting spacious surfaces like backgrounds. BRIGHT brushes are a thick, flat brush that curves inward close to the tip. This type of brush is used up close rather than at a distance and is ideal for handling thick, richly pigmented paints. A FILBERT brush is commonly used for soft, rounded strokes. The FAN brush is the right hand tool for artists who like to bring life and texture into their creations. The fan brush allows users to create feathery details. An ANGLE brush is seen as a cross between the flat brush and the pointed round tip. This brush allows artists to cover wide spaces and fill in small areas that aren’t easily reached. DETAIL ROUND brushes have short hairs and are great for those little sparkles in people’s eyes.

Artists brushes come in all different shapes and sizes and there are certain brushes for specific paints there are brushes for acrylics, oils and water colours. For some suggestions of the best acrylic paint brushes and the best oil paint brushes from my many years of experience check these out.

Tip: Always have a good think about what you intend to do with your paint brush, never have unrealistic expectations.
