A Medium for Every Need: Here are some of our Favourites
Medium refers to the materials that artists use to create a work of art. While individuals may be most familiar with mediums like oil or watercolour, there are in fact a wide variety of mediums out there. As an art and craft supplies store, we here at Artworx pride ourselves on providing the very best selection of mediums for you to choose from. If you are not sure what medium you are after just give us a call. With our many years of experience and being artists ourselves we have used just about every medium. Here is a brief rundown of some of the mediums we stock.
Oils: Traditional & Waterbased
Art Spectrum mediums are widely used with oil paints and watercolour paints. They have several popular oil painting mediums that thin and thicken your paint along with great solvents. They also carry a few mediums that are a little bit different like Rabbit Skin Glue (great for making your own canvases) and Talc. Australian made and owned Art Spectrum mediums are a popular choice as they are always a consistent quality at a reasonable price point
Cobra and Weber mediums are ideal for waterbased oils. Both brands can be intermixed with traditional oil paints but the mediums themselves offer a range of odorless turpenoids great alternatives to traditional solvents and brush cleaners for people who suffer from asthma and the likes. Why paint with fumes if you don’t have to!
Atelier mediums are another Australian made and owned product and are part of the Chroma family along with A2, Chromacryl and Jo Sonjas. Atelier mediums are considered the artist choice of medium. Popular products include Liquifying medium (great for thinning acrylics, especially if you want watercolour effects or to run the paint through an airbrush). Atelier Slow medium is great for extending the blending time of your acrylics. Competitively, priced, they are popular art supplies for anyone working in acrylic.
Chromacryl mediums are also part of the Chroma family. These mediums are extremely good quality and good value. Designed for beginners and students in mind, I know a lot of professional artists that use these mediums too. The texture paste (white opaque) and impasto medium (transparent, not as bulky great for glazes too) are among the two most popular mediums, both are great for adding texture and bulking up your acrylic paints.
Jo Sonja’s mediums are part of the Chroma family. They are artist quality and they have great variety in the range, all are intermixable with acrylics. Glass and Tile Medium and Textile medium are two mediums that come straight to mind. Jo Sonjas also do a great waterbased varnish range from gloss, satin to matte.
Derivan and Matisse mediums offer a huge selection of acrylic painting mediums for artists. Derivan is their student range and Matisse is artist grade. Australian made and owned, they have a great selection of bulk mediums from 250ml pots to 1 litre bottles and up. They also do a range of Dry mediums, which is a little bit different. Dry mediums include crushed stone in a number of different colours, perfect for mixed media and unique projects.
Liquitex mediums are favoured the world over, artist quality acrylic mediums.
If you are looking for spray on varnishes Micador, National Art Materials and Xpress sprays are all basically the same but marketed differently.
