The low down on the velvety bloom that Art Spectrum Soft Pastels have to offer in the Art Supplies World
Did you know? It is very easy to understand the manipulation of the pigment colour in each Art Spectrum soft pastel by its label
D – Darkest : N – Dark (Nero): P - Pure Pigment: T – Tinted: V – Very Tinted: X – Extra Tinted
Art Spectrum Pastels are made in Australia with some of the most pure and vibrant pigments from all over the world. Each pigment is tripled milled and held together with very little binder (glue), which ultimately makes these pastels beautiful and soft to work with. Art Spectrum pastels have no hidden nasties in their ingredients; they are free of asbestos (who knew they made things with asbestos in this day and age?) and heavy metals. The pastel spectrum colours are quite unique and that is why most artists love them and if they don’t they are guaranteed to have one or two of them in their art supplies. The standard size of Art Spectrum soft pastels is 70x12mm, they have larger pastels in the range. These are great if you love a colour, work large or are blocking out areas in your artwork.
Pan pastels have developed a range of blending pastel tools that work hand in hand with the Art Spectrum pastels and any other brand. Other popular pastel tools include kneadable erasers, paper stumps and fixative; most pastel artists will have these in their artist supplies. When it comes to paper and pastels, Colourfix is a fabulous heavy, 340gsm toothy cardstock with texture like fine sandpaper but if you are wanting to work with something lighter in weight and more like a textured cardstock the Prisma Favini is a nice 220gsm surface to work on, this is available in large sheets, A3 and A4. If working on paper is more your style the Mi-Teintes sheets are a nice lightweight of 160gsm. A range of pastel paper pads are also available and if you want to go all out there with something different Colourfix have a range of pastel primers; these acrylic based coloured gessoes can be painted onto anything, canvases, wooden panels, you name it.
As a team of artists and creators we use the products we endorse in our studios. Brands do not sponsor us; if you have any questions niggling away don’t hesitate to drop us a line. We have the experience and the resources to answer just about anything. When checking out with your art supplies don’t forget to peruse our artist VIP membership. We all love a bit of arty karma; plus it will keep you up to date with art classes and workshops with some of Australia’s finest artists.
Tip:With over a decade of experience in the art supplies market I have heard there is nothing quite like a Schnminke white pastel; a favourite among all pastel artists when we run workshops. Apparently it is the only white pastel in the market that will glide over the top of another pastel and not tint the colours underneath. This is of course only good if you are after a non-blended effect in your soft pastel art.
