What are the Best Artist Pastels in the Art Supplies Market?
When it comes to anything art supplies there are so many brands to choose from and this is not to mention products. Finding the ‘best’ of anything can be challenging or I like to say tricky. With over a decade of experience in the art supplies industry this is what I know about Art Spectrum soft artists pastels or as some may call them AS pastels. Each Art Spectrum pastel is made up of triple milled pigment that is sourced from all over the world but they are handmade right here in Australia.
Very little binding agent (glue) is used in the making of each one of the pastel sticks. Making the pigment chalky and soft. These pastels are not silky smooth and soft like Schminke pastels, they have a bit more grunt in them and are more like chalk sticks but not as hard. They are not a hard pastel either; each stick tends to crumble a lit bit depending on the amount of pressure you apply to your working surface. Talking about pastel surfaces our most popular range to date, one that is preferred by many professional artists that come and work in our studios is the Colourfix range. This is an interesting type of paper, it is actually an Italian water colour paper that has had a toothy (textured) primer screen printed onto the surface to give a base colour. For example the blue shades of Colourfix paper are perfect for seascapes and the more natural tones like soft umber make great backgrounds for landscapes. The Colourfix range of muted colours are perfect for any subject matter. Colourfix also have a great range of assorted packs that you can experiment with. If you are looking for more of a textured cardtsock to work with Prisma Favini is great and it comes in 500x700mm sheets, in A3 and A4. If paper weight is more your style the Mi-Teintes range is ideal; the black is very popular and if you are still not sure there is always assorted pastel pads.
Favoured artists supplies that generally accompany a pastel artists kit include pastel boxes, assorted erasers particularly the kneadable and pencil or battery type erasers, fixative, Pan pastel accessories, Colourfix acrylic primer gessos that allow canvases, assorted cardstock or papers and wooden panels to become a workable pastel surface. If you are just starting out drawing boards with big bull dog clips will help you keep your paper secure and will provide you with a nice flat, smooth surface that you can either have flat or mounted on an easel.
